Under the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and CNRS(The French National Centre for Scientific Research), the French Institute for Anatolian Studies (IFEA) conducts activities related to studies in the fields of human and social sciences as well as Ancient History sciences on the territories of the Ottoman Empire and Turkey. The Institute has its own documentation centers, a library and a rich map archive. The Institute has four fields of studies, namely Archeological Studies, Byzantine and Seljukian Studies, Ottoman and Turkish Studies and Contemporary Studies. Ottoman and Turkish History Studies includes the period from the foundation to the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire and the period from the first years of the Republic of Turkey until the end of World War II. Contemporary Studies, on the other hand, covers the studies on Turkey of different disciplines from the last years of the Ottoman Empire to the present day. This field of study is composed of four centers: Istanbul Observation Centre(OUI), Turkish Policy Observation Centre (OVIPOT), Cultural Policy Observation Centre and Caucasus Observation Centre.
